Movable Type connects to Fire Eagle geolocation service
If you haven't heard about Fire Eagle till now, it's a location brokering service that allows you to manage how your location is shared with friends or applications. Fire Eagle provides a way for you to let applications update your location and let other applications access that information. Login problems and hosting moves It has come to my attention that many Hiveminds members have not been able to login consistently. I am working on this and appreciate the emails informing us of the situation. Unfortunately I will have to do this on a one by one basis and require your user name to lookup your login info. So if you send a email please include this.
The source of the problems seems to have been that Dreamhost moved Hiveminds magazine to a newer server. As it happened I was also trying to upgrade some of the scripts and design. So some information may have been lost. We will get this fixed so please be patient.
Improving Drupals File Structure for FireOrb One of the things that bugs me most about Drupal is the file structure. It is totally chaotic. When you try and find something in the core it usually is spread over five or six files. A function here a function there. This is because there is no MVC or any type of pattern to the madness.
So what we decided to do with FireOrb is to do some big time house cleaning. Files are being moved and renamed so that when you look in includes or core you see just what is available. This is a preliminary to making the structure so that you can update the files by just overwriting or replacing a single directory.
I am also going to try and inject some Movable Type style structure to the backend so that when I want to make changes in the database functions I can find the files containing those functions in the directory named "database".
Movabletype is not Serious About Open Source Movabletype released an open source version of Movabletype 4.1 Yea!. But they suck at creating and supporting a community. Boo!. Nearly a half year ago they opened Movabletype.org again. Since then the only thing you can get there is confused.
First they have the beta version of the CMS under the download button on the first page. Not the MTOS (open source) version but the retail version that is in beta! It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out this is just wrong.
Secondly there is no community. "If you build it they will come". Hint: You have to build it first you dorks. How about a forum? A mailing list? Links to them?
Six Apart is filled with knowledgable people so the only reason that I can see that movabletype.org is in the condition it is in is because they just don't give a shit. The move to GPL movabletype is just PR and nothing else.
Carl is constantly ranting about how bad the ezPublish open source community is because ezPublish does nothing to help. Well now they have company.
