Community solftware is usually based on a forum where members can post topics and interact with each other. This type of community is moderated by one or more members. Postings by members are in a conversational tone and not very long. Feedback from the membership is required is the community is to be sucessful and grow.

A community can also be built around other forms of interaction like a blog where the members have more control of their own space. Each member can post an article and allow others to post comments. This type of community is becoming more popular. Postings by members are in an article form and do not necessarily require comments or feedback. A community may or may not form out of this type of interaction.

Community software allows both of the types of interaction listed here and probably a few more. They can do this through addons or built in capabilities.
