Community Building

Feeling a little nostalgic I surfed over the waybackmachine.org and looked up some of the old Builder Buzz. Man have we come a long way!

Web progamming

One of my first PHP threads

I was amazed by the amount of information that was being traded. While I love Sitepoint.com it still does not have the same feel of comradery that Builder Buzz had.

So I have to wonder since there are no communities like the old buzz around why is that? Has the web changed that much? Even taking into account the dot.com bomb some things just don't add up. What was the secret ingredient that made Builder Buzz such a hit?

Was it the people that made it? or was it the timing? While many have moved on from doing web work to having jobs as teachers, car mechanics and machinist. I have Googled some information as I like looking to see what websites and careers have survived almost ten years. The old buzz personalities for the most part still surf the web and are interested in the internet as a whole but have not grouped in dedicated manner. Maybe they have not found the right watering hole. If you surf around some of the links at waybackmachine.org for cached pages you will get a idea of what I am talking about. But be careful if you are an old buzz member. Reading the threads may bring a tear to your eye or at least make you want raise a beer glass to the past.

In any case has community building has become easier than it was in 1999? With all the advancements in the internet one would think so but it just does not seem to be that way. Now with everyone talking about and doing Web 2.0 will another Builder Buzz turn up? I certainly hope so. I miss that place.

Happy Publishing!
