The internet is going to go back to the dot.com days in 2007. Only this time it will be more serious. Expect all of the things that are associated with Web 2.0 to start costing or become part of a large income scheme. 2007 will be the year that venture capitalist will want to see some return on their investments. ROI will become the number one used acronym of the 2007 web.

Web 2.0 technology will be all the rage in 2007. More RSS. AJAX and mash-up possibilties. The difference will be that things are going to be income oriented. This finance burden will be passed on down the line so there will be less if no YouTube, Digg or Technorati type sites making it big. But online dating, private clubs and gaming hubs will be bought in bunches by entrepreneurs. They will then sell those groups like you would sell a super market chain. Buy ten dating sites with memberships of 10,000 each make some changes to get them all up to 30,000 and then sell the group.

RSS will become more popular but it will be filled with advertising and advertisings spouse, spam. AJAX will gain more usage but mostly in areas like banners and places where holding the frontend without changes will bring more click throughs.

The big guns like Google, Yahoo and Amazon will become selfish and more controlling. You will no longer be able to build a mashup without paying for the services needed. For the little people it will mean more iframes, AJAX iframes and other technologies that will control part of the users website.

It's going to be a windfall year for advertisers and e-commerce. Like always when ad revenues are up spam increases multifold. There will be lots of money to be made and the fight to get a piece of the pie is going to create commercialism on a scale that has never been seen before.

There will be more of a push for open source software. But only because it is going to increase the chance of financial gain without expenditures. Companies will be backing open source software but not much of it will be GPL. Expect the BSD and it siblings to over take the GPL. This will happen because companies will go into protect mode. They will let anyone have the code. Just not their version of it.

Why will all of this happen? Cheap laptop computers, mobile phones, pda's and flatscreens. The world is suddenly going to go mobile and instead of investing in billboards and TV commercials, corporations are going to go with push advertising online. Expect a boom year for Microsoft where Windows will gain a large chuck of the mobile device market.

Flatscreens do not take up much space, are cooler than CRTs and are taking over. LCD monitors are so cheap now that they will not be repaired but thrown away. Where companies would have not thought of putting a CRT they will put up multiple LCD screens. Trains, Planes and any place you visit on a weekly or daily basis will be covered with them. On those screens will be lots of internet action. Websites that with the help of AJAX provide services but stay in your face.

No, It will not be a pretty sight but at least you may be able to put a buck or two in your own pocket.
