According to Sun there will be more advances made in the database software. MySQL is build on open source code and is the defacto database for just about every opensource application on the internet. Sun promises that now there will be continued commercial and enterprise support for the database. The deal will be finalized in the third quarter of this year and the first payment will be 800 million dollars. The final payment of 200 million will see that Marten Mickos comes along as a member of the Sun executive board. MySQL in the last year has seen tremendous growth outside of the Linux, Apache and PHP market. Many companies and web hosts use MySQL as the backbone to their Microsoft platform developed applications. the potential growth will place Sun solidly at the top as a provider of web technology. Sun will also be a critical link in the web ecosystem as so much of it is based on the MySQL database software. Marten Mickos believes that MySQL will continue to make breakthroughs in the IT world and that Suns business model and MySQL are very similar. The buy out could mean good news for large users of MySQL like Google, Facebook and Nokia along with others that have resisted using MySQL as an enterprise database system.
