Carl | Sat, 2008-02-23 23:17 tags: Open source, Opinion I can't write much just now because the battery on my MAC is down to 13% and falling. No matter where is is held the electrical facilities for a Geek Fest is always inadequate. So here we sit waiting for the PHP6 talk and listening to the Perl6 presentation. Hopefully I will be able to sneak to a electrical contact in between time. ![]() Mike De Man, Marcus Johansson, Daniele Testa The question remains. Did the Hiveminds Team fall asleep out of boredom or just waiting for Perl6 to be finished? I think that although the speaker was very dynamic and animated the it would have been more interesting to have seen an actual demonstration of what Perl6 is capable of. But alas no such luck. Perl6 has not even reached a level where a simple hello demo by one of the core programmers is not possible. I have to wonder why I am listening to this talk on Perl6 when the only thing I want the speaker to say is... "It's finished and you can build production applications it." But that won't happen will it? Well, of course the question was asked "Why is Perl taking so long?" The answer was "given the amount of features that Perl 6 will have and does have it is not taking very long at all". The thinking is that Perl6 is an entirely new language and we all know that those take ten years to get finished.
