Microsoft has always been confused by open source as is apparent by their refusal to adopt the GPL as part of their Codeplex.com project. But despite the silliness of "MPL", which I only see as a good excuse to brand an open source license, the number of ASP.NET applications claiming to be open source is growing.

Why no GPL?

It is not a mystery as to why those creating software and wanting to be a part of the open source community are not willing to use the GPL. Some where in the back of their minds they are unsure. They may be thnkking that somewher down the line the GPL will prevent them from cashing in on their work. This is the viral dollar sign that always comes with Microsoft technology. But since the MPL is OSI approved there is not much to complain about.

ASP.NET MVC

One growing trend is the use of the ASP.NET MVC. This framework seems to be the push that was needed to get new comers and old timers to ASP.NET to create some great apps and release them into the wild so that they can get help form the community in developing them. Two projects that standout in this area are Kigg and Yonkly. Kigg is a Digg clone and Yonkly is a Twitter clone. Both use the ASP.NET preview to accomplish their task. ASP.NET MVC may actually allow ASP.NET to take over for Classic ASP. The framework removes many of the hurdles like webforms which get in the way of free coding applications.
