How do I compete with Facebook?

Question - posted on:Wed, 2008-07-23 17:03

Facebook's ever rising popularity is starting to effect my website. While no one has completely left my website for facebook, but they do spend less time on my website, as they spend more time on facebook.

My website is like a social portal, with forums, chat, photo albums etc. In fact, my core business of chat and forums, is something facebook doesn't offer (well at least not exactly as I have them)

So my question to you guys is (and as a webmaster, you should start asking this question yourself too) how do you compete with facebook? or do you even comete, and rather just accept it, and move on? of course, my +5000 hits a day website is no match for facebook. But I am sure there are things we can do as webmaster to stop our members from going to facebook and spending less time there.

Some of the things I have been doing:

  • Never admit to my members that I am in competition with facebook.

  • Find any negative articles I can find about facebook and post them on my forums: such as people getting addicted to it, employers firing people because it and so on. I would like to present it to them as something negative, and not to waste hours and hours on it.

  • Try to find which tools or features are most popular on facebook and try to put them on my website, so people don't have to leave my website.

  • And lately, I have been writing toturials for people who need to know how to remove themselvs from facebook, and so far I have succeded in removing 5 people from there (they spend most of their time on my website now)

What else would or do you do now to compete with facebook guys?

What you want to do is take advantage of Facebooks strengths and make them work for you. Using their login API and their API system you can actually drive traffic to your community without spamming.

the first thing you want to do is to find a CMS that lets you use the Facebook login for access control. This is so that once a Facebook user has logged in to facebook they are automatically logged into to your web community. You can do this pretty easily using Drupal or Wordpress.

The after effect of setting up the login is that your website is now a facebook application. this means that you can promote it just like any other application at facebook. get really involved in providing things that face book ignores or cannot create like community management functionality. Content is also a good thing once you have Drupal set up then you can entice new membeers with good content on the communities common interest.
