MySQL creator might leave Sun Micro

Monty, the guy that wrote most of the MySQL code back in 1995 is now thinking about leaving Sun. Sun aquired MySQL a few months ago and apparently the size and management systems of Sun don't give Monty that warm cozy feeling. He misses working for a small company where everbody knows your name.
No one is quite sure what this will mean for MySQL developement in the future. Though Widienius probably is not resonsible for many of latest innovations in MySQL it does raise some questions. MySQL is still open source and the one person that understands the source most is leaving. Probably to start another project that he can control and develop without the ever watching eyes of a billion dollar corporation upon it. Maybe things like Brian Akers Drizzel intrigue him but he is not ready to play in someone elses sandbox.
Whatever he does, it whether it be mediocre or not, will draw attention and a multitude of employees for his next venture.
Ulf Michael Widenius (often called Monty), born March 3, 1962, in Helsinki, Finland, is the main author of the original version of the open-source MySQL database and a founding member of the MySQL AB company.

YouTube down again??

YouTube is having big problems or they are being attacked again. It seems that here in europe the youtube website has been non-contactable for a few minutes at a time intermittently. This is the second time within a months period that they have suffered from some form of outage.
This may be proof that YouTube can never work because of the amount of stress it places on the free web. So maybe a pay internetworking system will soon be in the Google thinking.

What is Firebug Lite?

There have been a few websites giving notice to Opera's soon to come developer tool, Dragonfly. Dragonfly is a javascript debugging tool for the Opera web browser. Microsoft is also coming out with its own javascript debugger in a developer tools package. But is having a bunch of debugger tools in each web browser what developers want? Probably not. Luckily The makers of Firebug have come up with a solution. It's called Firebug Lite.
Firebug is an extension for Firefox, but what happens when you need to test your pages in Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari? If you are using
console.log()
to write to Firebug's console, you'll wind up with JavaScript errors in these other browsers, and that's no fun.

FireOrb build 0002 - Backend templates

Okay, seperate backend and frontend theme system is done. This in not just a redirect to a new page template but an implementation of the complete theme for the backend.
So now you can create a theme for the backend without interpolating the code for it into the frontends theme. Firered can be the frontend and as soon as you go to the new control panel you can choose a theme like Marvin. Blocks and regions are seperate so removing or moving theme is easy and does not conflict when changing from one area to the next.
Especially important is the fact that the control panel can have a completly different navigation system from the frontend. Give it a try. demo admin/admin

vbDrupal - We are not alone

Some might be thinking that one person or a small group of persons could never hope to run a fork of Drupal because of its size or whatever. vbDrupal proves that the only thing you really need is to "just do it".
vbDrupal is a fork of the CMS Drupal. It integrates Drupal into the forum software vBulletin.
Drupal and vBulletin are tightly connected with eachother, user accounts and sessions are shared between the two systems. vbDrupal tries to offer the best of both worlds.
vbDrupal is completely free, however it does require that you have a valid vBulletin license. The project is hosted on SourceForge.net, from there you can download the product and/or it's sources. vbDrupal.org is the community site where we try to offer support, it is also a showcase of the product.
This fork of Drupal seems to be gaining momentum as the need for a robust forum like vBulliten is needed as the hub for creating a community. Though FireOrb will not be headed in a similar direction it is nice to know that others feel the necessity to implement new ideas.

FireOrb Build 0001

Because so many things have to be changed FireOrb is going to be done in a nightly build process. The function naming system has to be put into place at the same time as development of some other systems like theming are put into place. This means I can change maybe 40 function names while creating a build for say the backend theming or while cleaning up the hook system.
The hook system is going to be the next big change right after getting seperate templates to work for the front and backend. The use of module_invoke_all and some other chaos makes it hard to find out just where Drupal gets its list of available hooks. While this mean flexibility for third party developers it means that core system development becomes incredibly impossible to organize. You can find hook_init and hook_exit quite easily but the rest are hidden in a mish mash of spagetti code, what function implements hook_menu? What about those other critical core hooks where are they started from? . There should be a central array that has core hooks listed. This make it easier to extend the core for both core development and third party development. Having a global containing this array would make things so much easier performance wise. The global can be called and adjusted appropiatly before calling hooks preventing loading of uneccessary modules.
That's enough for now. FireOrb build 0001 is now in the demo area. File releases will come soon after the theming/templating system is complete.

Tobii Eye Tracking Looks to Asia

Tobii Techonology has gone from a weekend project in moms basement to being on of Swedens fastest growing tech businesses. If everything goes according to plan, Tobiis eyetracker will soon be a computer standard.
The Tobii product line is built upon a technology that measures how vision moves over the surface of a monitor. This technic allows for movement by the the user. Older similar tchnology required that the user remain complete ly still. But Tobii those with injuries and are otherwise physically challenged can use the software and hardware easily.
ALthough patented the Tobii technology could be reproduced by a large electronics or software manfacturer like Microsoft or Logitech. This is one of the reason that the Tobii company has it eyes set on the Asian markets. With the right partnerships in Asia they might be able to release a mass marketed product and stem any competition that might pop up in the near future.

PHP6 Binaries for Windows Released!

The last few months I have been keeping an eye on http://snaps.php.net to see when and if the windows binaries for PHP6 would show. A couple of days ago the nightly builds started showing for win32. Now I can experiment with PHP6 and learn more about it without having to compile the source.
This is a happy coincidence because a fellow worker asked me if I had tried PHP6 and what did I think. I declined to answer because I have been too lazy to do anything more than download the source and look at it. But now I think I will take the weekend and run some test code and Content Management Sytems like Drupal and Joomla on PHP6 to see what happens.
So if you are a lazy windows web developer like me then go download PHP6 now and start testing. The sooner more programmers adopt it the better it will be.
