While participating at other websites I get asked what forum software that I recommend. I then get lots of private messages and emails asking me why I dislike Simple Machines Forum. Before I get into this a preliminary is necessary. I was one of the web masters that got caught.

Smf is causing all sorts of havok in the open source world. It's licensing and popularity have brought it under the scrutiny of GPL projects. These projects are now saying no to Simple Machine Forum and the development of software that connects to it. I love saying "I told you so". So "I told you so". The subject of this blog will soon be the subject of many more. SMF may ultimate have to take their software to a full commercial version. This was probably in the plans before as was hinted...

I can't write much just now because the battery on my MAC is down to 13% and falling. No matter where is is held the electrical facilities for a Geek Fest is always inadequate. So here we sit waiting for the PHP6 talk and listening to the Perl6 presentation. Hopefully I will be able to sneak to a electrical contact in between time.

1984 again and again. The recent clamour for banks and some of the largest internet based business like Google, Yahoo getting together on the same board that is promoting OpenID. How wonderful you may be thinking. But you are wrong!

If Google wants to stop Microsoft in a fair fight then they will have to do more than make promises to Yahoo! One of the easiest and most predictable moves would be to aquire Sun Microsystems. This would level the playing field so that the best would come out on top. To be in the same league and compete with Microsoft Google needs an Operative system, desktop software, hardware and server systems. They can not hope to continue to grow without these. By acquiring Sun they would get all of...

The most irritating thing on my mind right now is the proposed merger of Microsoft and Yahoo!. This is because so called "industry analysts" are writing about how Google will remain number one regardless. I don't know what school these people went to or what planet they live on but they are seriously misguided and mis-informed. Not only that but they are really wrong in thinking that Google can ever knock Microsoft out of its place as the number one reason that people use IT. Google is...

When I first read about this on the Drupal mailing lists a week ago I kind of waved it off as being a good idea but not something many PHP content management system projects would be interested in. The idea is to make a unified, concentrated effort to drop PHP4 support and drive PHP5 adoption in the year 2008. Think of it. All CMS, forum and framework projects going completly over to PHP5 on a set date! This would be like a bomb dropping on the web hosting world and cause ripples throughout...

Just this week I am starting to appreciate the power of Joomla! as a web developer. Having done a good deal of Drupal CMS development I have gotten spoiled by the simplicity of Drupals chaotic module scheme and its open architecture. So when I went into Joomla previously it was only as a administrator or installer. But this latest project required that I do more than just touch the surface of Joomla! but go in under the hood and manipulate some code.

Only geeks use RSS feeds. Is this true? Unfortunately yes. Why? well because like most things in web technology and computers only geeks can understand that nothing is one hundred percent all the time. RSS feeds are not popular because most of them are broken or fail frequently. The owners of RSS feeds do not check them often enough to make sure they are working and valid.
