After all the time that has been spent on creating a "easy installer" Drupal is still one of the hardest CMS to install. Why? Upgrading! Upgrading Drupal to any version is a nightmare! This blog could have very well been labeled "14 reasons to hire a Drupal professional". Because much of what is required to upgrade an installation will take a good web developer, one that is familiar with all of Drupals quirks, to fix if something goes wrong.

Forgotten about in all the IE7 hype is the next Firefox release. Well to make it publically known I am not at all interested in IE7. It is way too soon to be concerned with it. I am however interested and concerned with the way websites look in Firefox2 Beta. Installing Firefox2 Beta would mean replacing a stable Firefox 1.5. When what I need is to be able to switch back and forth between them.

I was looking into learning Flex Flash/Shockwave content, but I did not want to spend $500 on an Eclipse variant sold by Adobe. The Adobe Flex 3 SDK is Adobe's free software development kit for Actionscript 3. It's based around an XML document format that allows code to be embedded with data, but will also compile ActionScript 'as' files with embedded 'tagged' data in the code.

The GPL explicitly allows you to charge a fee for delivery, service or whatever for your GPL-licensed code. There really is no debating that fact that you can legally charge for GPL software. The only other argument here against selling GPL-licensed scripts is simply that some pirate or other evil-doer will nab your script and re-sell or freely re-distribute your application, making your pay-to-play model irrelevant. As a developer of a GPL-licensed application, access to which I charge a...

FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map) software written in Java. The recent development has hopefully turned it into high productivity tool. We are proud that the operation and navigation of FreeMind is faster than that of MindManager because of one-click "fold / unfold" and "follow link" operations. So you want to write a completely new metaphysics? Why don't you use FreeMind? You have a tool at hand that remarkably resembles the tray slips of Robert...

During FOSDEM an interesting conversation came up about what Drupal version the really big websites are using. Some seem to think that these monolithic installations like Linux Journal and MTV would be using Drupal 5.0. My take on it was that since it takes the better part of a year to build these web sites that they probably would never upgrade past Drupal 4.7. This also became a point of curiosity when we returned home. Daniele Testa came up with an easy way of checking. Just look for the...

Arnold talks about how to persist user authentication without using sessions. The solution is intersesting in that it covers the problem of trying to use sessions over multiple servers. I found this to be a little eye opener because one of the requests for features for FireOrb is that each user should have their own salt so that authentication in Ajax is simpler. vbBulliten does something similar to this and it is very effective.

First, credit where it is due: All I know about this was learned from looking at Eric Meyer's Slantastic Demo and playing around. We thought it would be interesting to re-investigate his experiments because of all the changes in browsers since then.

While updating the Hiveminds website I thought that we should be tracking downloads via Google Analytics. I had two reasons for doing this. The first was to have a proof that it could actually be done because of constantly being ignored by management. For some reason they always bring up the subject of tracking downloads , flash and internal campaign links but there ears and minds shut down whenever the solution is to use Google Analytics.

I just figured out what to me is a serious bug in Firefox 1.5 and above. It seems that if you are using overflow on a div there is a minimun height that has to be set before the scroll vertical scroll bar appears. I was creating a Drupal form when I notice that in IE6/7 the vertical scrollbar was fine. I was using a height of 30px which works fine in IE. Though small the controls appear. If I use auto then things are still fine and the scroll controls are full-sized regardless the 30px...
